You might remember, WAAAAY back in March, one of my very first newsletters was about a podcast I absolutely adore, You’re Wrong About. Well, Sarah Marshall, one of the hosts, has started a new podcast called Why Are Dads? and with two episodes out, I can firmly state that it is very good and worth listening to.
Her cohost on this one is Alex Steed and together the two explore dads in movies in order to extrapolate bigger ideas about fathers. The first two episodes, Jaws and Dirty Dancing, are both great. I’m a huge fan of Jaws but never really thought about it in a framework of fatherhood. Meanwhile, I’m not super keen on Dirty Dancing (shockingly, the ace girl never really jived with the sexual awakening movie) but hearing their take on it made me appreciate parts of it more than I had previously.
I’ve been very lucky in that I have a great dad that I’m very close to so I’ve never thought super hard about fathers and that relationship to children, to wives, to masculinity and all the rest. This is a nuanced, well thought out and ultimately, delightful podcast that will have you rethinking things, agreeing with things, and just watching some great films. Can recommend.
